Adhyāya 15 Shloka 9

श्रोत्रं चक्षुः स्पर्शनं च रसनं घ्राणमेव च | अधिष्ठाय मनश्चायं विषयानुपसेवते || ९ ||

śrotraṁ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṁ ca rasanaṁ ghrāṇam eva ca | adhiṣṭhāya manaś cāyaṁ viṣayān upasevate || 9 ||

"The living entity, thus taking another gross body, obtains a certain type of ear, eye, tongue, nose and sense of touch, which are grouped about the mind. He thus enjoys a particular set of sense objects."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Continuing the process of reincarnation, Krishna details what happens when the soul enters the new body. The living entity is equipped with a specific set of biological hardware: ears (śrotraṁ), eyes (cakṣuḥ), touch (sparśanaṁ), tongue (rasanaṁ), and nose (ghrāṇam). All these senses are grouped around and directed by the mind (adhiṣṭhāya manaś). With this new customized toolkit, the soul proceeds to enjoy (or suffer) a very particular set of sense objects (viṣayān upasevate) dictated by its past karma.
