Ch 15Verse 8
Adhyāya 15 Shloka 8

शरीरं यदवाप्नोति यच्चाप्युत्क्रामतीश्वरः | गृहीत्वैतानि संयाति वायुर्गन्धानिवाशयात् || ८ ||

śarīraṁ yad avāpnoti yac cāpy utkrāmatīśvaraḥ | gṛhītvaitāni saṁyāti vāyur gandhān ivāśayāt || 8 ||

"The living entity in the material world carries his different conceptions of life from one body to another as the air carries aromas. Thus he takes one kind of body and again quits it to take another."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explains the exact mechanics of transmigration (reincarnation) using a beautiful metaphor. When the living entity (here called īśvaraḥ, the master of his own body) quits one physical body (utkrāmati) and obtains a new one (avāpnoti), he carries his conceptions, desires, and mental state with him. How? Just as the wind (vāyur) carries the subtle fragrance of a flower (gandhān) away from its source (ivāśayāt), the subtle body (mind, intelligence, false ego) carries the soul from the old gross body into the new one.
