Ch 15Verse 7
Adhyāya 15 Shloka 7

ममैवांशो जीवलोके जीवभूतः सनातनः | मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणि प्रकृतिस्थानि कर्षति || ७ ||

mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke jīva-bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ | manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛti-sthāni karṣati || 7 ||

"The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most defining verses regarding the soul's identity. Krishna states definitively that the living entities (jīva-bhūtaḥ) in this world are His own eternal fragmental parts (mamaivāṁśo... sanātanaḥ). But what are these divine fragments doing here? They are trapped in material nature (prakṛti-sthāni), struggling and toiling very hard (karṣati) against the six senses, the most powerful of which is the mind (manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi).
