Ch 15Verse 17
Adhyāya 15 Shloka 17

उत्तमः पुरुषस्त्वन्यः परमात्मेत्युदाहृतः | यो लोकत्रयमाविश्य बिभर्त्यव्यय ईश्वरः || १७ ||

uttamaḥ puruṣas tv anyaḥ paramātmety udāhṛtaḥ | yo loka-trayam āviśya bibharty avyaya īśvaraḥ || 17 ||

"Besides these two, there is the greatest living personality, the Supreme Soul, the imperishable Lord Himself, who has entered the three worlds and is maintaining them."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having defined the two categories of individual souls (fallible and infallible), Krishna introduces a third, completely distinct entity: the 'uttamaḥ puruṣas tv anyaḥ' (the Supreme Person, who is someone else entirely). This entity is celebrated as the Paramātmā (the Supreme Soul). What does He do? As the imperishable Lord (avyaya īśvaraḥ), He enters into the three worlds (loka-trayam āviśya) and personally maintains them (bibharti).
