Ch 14Verse 3
Adhyāya 14 Shloka 3

मम योनिर्महद्ब्रह्म तस्मिन्गर्भं दधाम्यहम् | सम्भवः सर्वभूतानां ततो भवति भारत || ३ ||

mama yonir mahad brahma tasmin garbhaṁ dadhāmy aham | sambhavaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ tato bhavati bhārata || 3 ||

"The total material substance, called Brahman, is the source of birth, and it is that Brahman that I impregnate, making possible the births of all living beings, O son of Bharata."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna uses a profound biological metaphor to explain the origin of life in the universe. He refers to the total unmanifested material energy (Mahat Tattva) as 'mahad brahma', which acts as the cosmic womb (yonir). Krishna states that He personally impregnates (garbhaṁ dadhāmy aham) this vast, inert material womb with the spiritual seeds (the living entities). From this divine union of spirit and matter, all living beings are born (sambhavaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ).
