Adhyāya 14 Shloka 21

अर्जुन उवाच | कैर्लिङ्गैस्त्रीन्गुणानेतानतीतो भवति प्रभो | किमाचारः कथं चैतांस्त्रीन्गुणानतिवर्तते || २१ ||

arjuna uvāca | kair liṅgais trīn guṇān etān atīto bhavati prabho | kim ācāraḥ kathaṁ caitāṁs trīn guṇān ativartate || 21 ||

"Arjuna inquired: O my dear Lord, by which symptoms is one known who is transcendental to these three modes? What is his behavior? And how does he transcend the modes of nature?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Hearing about this exalted state of liberation, Arjuna, ever the practical student, asks three rapid-fire, highly specific questions. 1) What are the observable symptoms (kair liṅgais) of someone who has transcended the three modes? 2) How does such a person behave and act in the world (kim ācāraḥ)? 3) By what exact process (katham) does one successfully transcend (ativartate) these overwhelming forces of nature?
