guṇān etān atītya trīn dehī deha-samudbhavān | janma-mṛtyu-jarā-duḥkhair vimukto 'mṛtam aśnute || 20 ||

"When the embodied being is able to transcend these three modes associated with the material body, he can become free from birth, death, old age and their distresses and can enjoy nectar even in this life."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna states the ultimate result of transcending (atītya) these three modes that encompass the body. The soul (dehī) becomes completely liberated (vimukto) from the four primary miseries of material existence: birth (janma), death (mṛtyu), old age (jarā), and all related distresses (duḥkhair). The result is tasting the nectar of immortality (amṛtam aśnute) while still residing in the physical body.
