Ch 14Verse 16
Adhyāya 14 Shloka 16

कर्मणः सुकृतस्याहुः सात्त्विकं निर्मलं फलम् | रजसस्तु फलं दुःखमज्ञानं तमसः फलम् || १६ ||

karmaṇaḥ sukṛtasyāhuḥ sāttvikaṁ nirmalaṁ phalam | rajasas tu phalaṁ duḥkham ajñānaṁ tamasaḥ phalam || 16 ||

"The result of pious action is pure and is said to be in the mode of goodness. But action done in the mode of passion results in misery, and action performed in the mode of ignorance results in foolishness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna summarizes the immediate, day-to-day results (phalam) of acting in the different modes. Actions performed in Sattva yield pure, peaceful, and spotless results. Actions driven by Rajas inevitably lead to duḥkham (misery, frustration, and pain). Actions performed in Tamas yield only ajñānam (deeper ignorance and foolishness).
