Ch 14Verse 13
Adhyāya 14 Shloka 13

अप्रकाशोऽप्रवृत्तिश्च प्रमादो मोह एव च | तमस्येतानि जायन्ते विवृद्धे कुरुनन्दन || १३ ||

aprakāśo 'pravṛttiś ca pramādo moha eva ca | tamasy etāni jāyante vivṛddhe kuru-nandana || 13 ||

"When there is an increase in the mode of ignorance, O son of Kuru, darkness, inertia, madness and illusion are manifested."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna diagnoses the dominance of Tamas (ignorance). The symptoms are the exact opposite of goodness and passion. Instead of illumination, there is aprakāśaḥ (darkness/absence of clarity). Instead of intense endeavor, there is apravṛttiś (inertia/inactivity). The final results are pramāda (madness/foolishness) and moha (deep illusion).
