Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna lists the diagnostic symptoms of a mind overpowered by Rajas (passion). The symptoms are unmistakable: lobhaḥ (greed), pravṛttir (over-exertion/intense activity), ārambhaḥ karmaṇām (taking on massive material projects), aśamaḥ (uncontrollable restlessness), and spṛhā (deep hankering and longing for things you don't have).
