Ch 13Verse 3
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 3

क्षेत्रज्ञं चापि मां विद्धि सर्वक्षेत्रेषु भारत | क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयोर्ज्ञानं यत्तज्ज्ञानं मतं मम || ३ ||

kṣetra-jñaṃ cāpi māṃ viddhi sarva-kṣetreṣu bhārata | kṣetra-kṣetrajñayor jñānaṃ yat taj jñānaṃ mataṃ mama || 3 ||

"O scion of Bharata, you should understand that I am also the knower in all bodies, and to understand this body and its knower is called knowledge. That is My opinion."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna introduces a staggering metaphysical addition to the previous definition. He says: O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), you must clearly understand (viddhi) that I Myself am also the Knower of the field (kṣetra-jñaṃ cāpi māṃ). But unlike you, I am the Knower situated perfectly within *all* bodies and all fields simultaneously (sarva-kṣetreṣu). Furthermore, the actual, factual understanding of these two entities—the field of activity and the Knower(s) of the field (kṣetra-kṣetrajñayor jñānaṃ yat)—that precise comprehension is what I consider to be true, supreme knowledge (taj jñānaṃ mataṃ mama).
