Ch 13Verse 2
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 2

श्रीभगवानुवाच | इदं शरीरं कौन्तेय क्षेत्रमित्यभिधीयते | एतद्यो वेत्ति तं प्राहुः क्षेत्रज्ञ इति तद्विदः || २ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | idaṃ śarīraṃ kaunteya kṣetram ity abhidhīyate | etad yo vetti taṃ prāhuḥ kṣetra-jña iti tad-vidaḥ || 2 ||

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: This body, O son of Kunti, is called the field, and one who knows this body is called the knower of the field."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna systematically begins answering Arjuna's six-part question, starting with the first pair. He says: O son of Kunti (kaunteya), this physical body (idaṃ śarīraṃ) is definitively called and known as the field of activity (kṣetram ity abhidhīyate). And the conscious entity who understands, observes, and knows this body (etad yo vetti) is declared and called the 'knower of the field' (taṃ prāhuḥ kṣetra-jña iti) by those wise sages who truly understand these subjects (tad-vidaḥ).
