Ch 13Verse 21
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 21

कार्यकारणकर्तृत्वे हेतुः प्रकृतिरुच्यते | पुरुषः सुखदुःखानां भोक्तृत्वे हेतुरुच्यते || २१ ||

kārya-kāraṇa-kartṛtve hetuḥ prakṛtir ucyate | puruṣaḥ sukha-duḥkhānāṁ bhoktṛtve hetur ucyate || 21 ||

"Nature is said to be the cause of all material causes and effects, whereas the living entity is the cause of the various sufferings and enjoyments in this world."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna clearly delineates the division of labor between matter and spirit. Prakṛti (material nature) is the fundamental engine driving all physical actions, causes, and bodily effects (kārya-kāraṇa-kartṛtve). However, the Puruṣa (the conscious soul) is the 'hetuḥ' (cause/experiencer) of the subjective feelings of happiness and distress (sukha-duḥkhānāṁ) that arise from interacting with that machinery.
