Ch 13Verse 22
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 22

पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्थो हि भुङ्क्ते प्रकृतिजान्गुणान् | कारणं गुणसङ्गोऽस्य सदसद्योनिजन्मसु || २२ ||

puruṣaḥ prakṛti-stho hi bhuṅkte prakṛti-jān guṇān | kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo 'sya sad-asad-yoni-janmasu || 22 ||

"The living entity in material nature thus follows the ways of life, enjoying the three modes of nature. This is due to his association with that material nature. Thus he meets with good and evil among various species."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explains the exact mechanism of reincarnation and karma. Because the soul is situated in material nature (prakṛti-stho), it tries to enjoy the psychological modes (guṇān) born of that nature. The singular cause (kāraṇaṁ) of the soul taking birth in various good or evil wombs (sad-asad-yoni) is its attachment or association (guṇa-saṅgo) with these specific modes of nature.
