Ch 13Verse 20
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 20

प्रकृतिं पुरुषं चैव विद्ध्यनादी उभावपि | विकारांश्च गुणांश्चैव विद्धि प्रकृतिसम्भवान् || २० ||

prakṛtiṁ puruṣaṁ caiva viddhy anādī ubhāv api | vikārāṁś ca guṇāṁś caiva viddhi prakṛti-sambhavān || 20 ||

"Material nature and the living entities should be understood to be beginningless. Their transformations and the modes of matter are products of material nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna now introduces a profound dualistic concept. He states that both material nature (prakṛti) and the conscious living entities (puruṣa/the soul) are 'anādī'—without beginning. They are both eternal energies of the Supreme. However, He clarifies that all the transformations (mutations, aging, bodily changes) and the psychological modes (goodness, passion, ignorance) are generated solely from material nature, not the soul.
