Ch 13Verse 15
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 15

सर्वेन्द्रियगुणाभासं सर्वेन्द्रियविवर्जितम् | असक्तं सर्वभृच्चैव निर्गुणं गुणभोक्तृ च || १५ ||

sarvendriya-guṇābhāsaṁ sarvendriya-vivarjitam | asaktaṁ sarva-bhṛc caiva nirguṇaṁ guṇa-bhoktṛ ca || 15 ||

"The Supersoul is the original source of all senses, yet He is without senses. He is unattached, although He is the maintainer of all living beings. He transcends the modes of nature, and at the same time He is the master of all the modes of material nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Continuing the description of the Divine, Krishna uses brilliant paradoxes. The Supreme illuminates all senses and their qualities, yet possesses no material senses Himself (sarvendriya-vivarjitam). He is completely detached (asaktaṁ), yet maintains everything (sarva-bhṛc). He is completely free from the material modes of nature (nirguṇaṁ), yet He is the ultimate master and enjoyer of those very modes (guṇa-bhoktṛ).
