Ch 13Verse 16
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 16

बहिरन्तश्च भूतानामचरं चरमेव च | सूक्ष्मत्वात्तदविज्ञेयं दूरस्थं चान्तिके च तत् || १६ ||

bahir antaś ca bhūtānām acaraṁ caram eva ca | sūkṣmatvāt tad avijñeyaṁ dūra-sthaṁ cāntike ca tat || 16 ||

"The Supreme Truth exists outside and inside of all living beings, the moving and the nonmoving. Because He is subtle, He is beyond the power of the material senses to see or to know. Although far, far away, He is also near to all."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna expands on the paradoxical nature of the Absolute. The Supreme exists simultaneously within every atom and outside of everything. Because this spiritual energy is incredibly subtle (sūkṣmatvāt), gross physical senses and material instruments cannot detect it. Thus, to the materially absorbed, God seems millions of miles away in some distant heaven, but to the spiritually awakened, He is nearer than their own breath.
