Ch 13Verse 13
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 13

ज्ञेयं यत्तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वामृतमश्नुते | अनादिमत्परं ब्रह्म न सत्तन्नासदुच्यते || १३ ||

jñeyaṁ yat tat pravakṣyāmi yaj jñātvāmṛtam aśnute | anādimat paraṁ brahma na sat tan nāsad ucyate || 13 ||

"I shall now explain the knowable, knowing which you will taste the eternal. Brahman, the spirit, beginningless and subordinate to Me, lies beyond the cause and effect of this material world."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having explained the 'field' (verses 6-7) and the process of 'knowledge' (verses 8-12), Krishna now shifts to the ultimate object of knowledge: the 'knowable' (jñeyam). He promises that understanding this will allow one to taste immortality (amṛtam). He defines this ultimate reality as the supreme Brahman—beginningless (anādimat), and existing entirely beyond the material dualities of cause (sat) and effect (asat).
