Ch 13Verse 12
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 12

अध्यात्मज्ञाननित्यत्वं तत्त्वज्ञानार्थदर्शनम् | एतज्ज्ञानमिति प्रोक्तमज्ञानं यदतोऽन्यथा || १२ ||

adhyātma-jñāna-nityatvaṁ tattva-jñānārtha-darśanam | etaj jñānam iti proktam ajñānaṁ yad ato 'nyathā || 12 ||

"Accepting the importance of self-realization; and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth—all these I declare to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes His 5-verse definition of knowledge by stating that one must maintain constancy in spiritual knowledge (adhyātma-jñāna-nityatvaṁ) and keep the true goal of philosophy—perceiving the Absolute Truth—always in sight (darśanam). He then makes a definitive, sweeping statement: All the traits listed in verses 8-12 constitute true knowledge. Anything contrary to this is simply ignorance (ajñānam).
