Aligning Consciousness

Ch 12Verse 5
Adhyāya 12 Shloka 5

क्लेशोऽधिकतरस्तेषामव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम् | अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भिरवाप्यते || ५ ||

kleśo 'dhikataras teṣām avyaktāsakta-cetasām | avyaktā hi gatir duḥkhaṃ dehavadbhir avāpyate || 5 ||

"For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifested, impersonal feature of the Supreme, advancement is very troublesome. To make progress in that discipline is always difficult for those who are embodied."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explicitly states the immense downside of the impersonal path. He says: The trouble, struggle, and tribulation are exceedingly greater (kleśo 'dhikataras) for those individuals (teṣām) whose minds and consciousness are attached to the unmanifested, formless void (avyaktāsakta-cetasām). Because (hi), the destination and path of the unmanifested (avyaktā gatir) is attained and achieved only with immense pain, suffering, and difficulty (duḥkhaṃ avāpyate) by those who are embodied in physical forms (dehavadbhir).
