Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna adds further defining characteristics of the perfected devotee. He says: One who is completely independent and free from all mundane expectations or dependencies (anapekṣaḥ), who is internally and externally clean and pure (śucir), who is highly expert, skillful, and perfectly capable in action (dakṣa), who remains unbiased, impartial, and neutral (udāsīno), and who is completely freed from all distress, sorrow, and mental torment (gata-vyathaḥ). One who has completely renounced all ego-driven, fruitive endeavors and ambitious undertakings designed for personal gain (sarvārambha-parityāgī)—that specific devotee of Mine (yo mad-bhaktaḥ) is very dear to Me (sa me priyaḥ).
