Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna begins a beautiful sequence detailing the specific, observable qualities of His most beloved devotees. He lists them: One who is entirely devoid of hatred or envy toward any living being (adveṣṭā sarva-bhūtānāṃ), who is a friendly well-wisher (maitraḥ) and deeply compassionate (karuṇa eva ca); one who is completely free from the concept of possessiveness or 'mine-ness' (nirmamo), and free from false ego and pride (nirahaṅkāraḥ); one who remains perfectly balanced and equipoised in both distress and happiness (sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ), and who is inherently tolerant and forgiving (kṣamī)... (Continues into Verse 14).
