Ch 12Verse 12
Adhyāya 12 Shloka 12

श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते | ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम् || १२ ||

śreyo hi jñānam abhyāsāj jñānād dhyānaṃ viśiṣyate | dhyānāt karma-phala-tyāgas tyāgāc chāntir anantaram || 12 ||

"If you cannot take to this practice, then engage yourself in the cultivation of knowledge. Better than knowledge, however, is meditation, and better than meditation is renunciation of the fruits of action, for by such renunciation one can attain peace of mind."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes His 'ladder of alternatives' by outlining a specific hierarchy of spiritual processes. He says: Cultivating knowledge is indeed better (śreyo hi jñānam) than mechanical practice without understanding (abhyāsāj). However, meditation is considered superior (viśiṣyate) to mere theoretical knowledge (jñānād dhyānaṃ). And better than meditation is the active renunciation of the fruits of one's actions (dhyānāt karma-phala-tyāgas). Why? Because from such renunciation, deep internal peace immediately follows (tyāgāc chāntir anantaram).
