Aligning Consciousness

Ch 12Verse 11
Adhyāya 12 Shloka 11

अथैतदप्यशक्तोऽसि कर्तुं मद्योगमाश्रितः | सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं ततः कुरु यतात्मवान् || ११ ||

athaitad apy aśakto 'si kartuṃ mad-yogam āśritaḥ | sarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṃ tataḥ kuru yatātmavān || 11 ||

"If, however, you are unable to work in this consciousness of Me, then try to act giving up all results of your work and try to be self-situated."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna drops the ladder of grace to its absolute lowest, most accessible rung. He states: If, however (atha), you are unable and powerless to do even this (etad apy aśakto 'si kartuṃ)—meaning you cannot bring yourself to work consciously and directly for Me (mad-yogam āśritaḥ)—then there is still a path. Taking shelter of your own self-control (yatātmavān), you should simply perform your actions while giving up and renouncing all the fruits and results of your work (sarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṃ tataḥ kuru).
