Ch 11Verse 8
Adhyāya 11 Shloka 8

न तु मां शक्यसे द्रष्टुमनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा | दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् || ८ ||

na tu māṃ śakyase draṣṭum anenaiva sva-cakṣuṣā | divyaṃ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogam aiśvaram || 8 ||

"But you cannot see Me with your present eyes. Therefore I give you divine eyes. Behold My mystic opulence!"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having told Arjuna to look at the entire universe inside His body, Krishna identifies the immediate biological problem. He says: However (tu), you are completely unable (na śakyase) to see or perceive Me (māṃ draṣṭum) with these present, ordinary, material eyes of yours (anenaiva sva-cakṣuṣā). Therefore, I am granting and bestowing upon you (dadāmi te) a divine, transcendental eye/vision (divyaṃ cakṣuḥ). Now, behold (paśya) My supreme, sovereign, mystic opulence and power (me yogam aiśvaram)!
