Ch 11Verse 53
Adhyāya 11 Shloka 53

नाहं वेदैर्न तपसा न दानेन न चेज्यया | शक्य एवंविधो द्रष्टुं दृष्टवानसि मां यथा || ५३ ||

nāhaṃ vedair na tapasā na dānena na cejyayā | śakya evaṃ-vidho draṣṭuṃ dṛṣṭavān asi māṃ yathā || 53 ||

"The form you are seeing with your transcendental eyes cannot be understood simply by studying the Vedas, nor by undergoing serious penances, nor by charity, nor by worship. It is not by these means that one can see Me as I am."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna expands on why this original two-armed form is so incredibly rare, echoing the language He used regarding the Universal Form in verse 48. He declares: I cannot be seen or understood as I truly am (nāhaṃ śakya evaṃ-vidho draṣṭuṃ) in the way that you are seeing Me right now (dṛṣṭavān asi māṃ yathā), simply by the extensive academic study of the Vedas (vedair), nor by the execution of severe physical penances (na tapasā), nor by the giving of massive charity (na dānena), nor by performing elaborate ritualistic worship and sacrifices (na cejyayā).
