sañjaya uvāca | ity arjunaṃ vāsudevas tathoktvā svakaṃ rūpaṃ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ | āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītam enaṃ bhūtvā punaḥ saumya-vapur mahātmā || 50 ||

"Sanjaya said to Dhritarashtra: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, having spoken thus to Arjuna, displayed His real four-armed form and at last showed His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful Arjuna."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The narration shifts back to Sanjaya to describe the actual transformation. He reports: Having spoken in this reassuring way to Arjuna (ity arjunaṃ tathoktvā), Lord Vasudeva (Krishna) once again fully revealed and displayed (darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ) His own personal, magnificent four-armed form (svakaṃ rūpaṃ). Then, the Great Soul (mahātmā) further assumed and transformed back into His original, beautiful two-armed form (bhūtvā punaḥ saumya-vapur), and by doing so, He completely pacified, comforted, and encouraged the terrified Arjuna (āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītam enaṃ).
