Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna reaches his breaking point and makes a desperate request. He states: Having seen this astonishing form which was never seen before by anyone (adṛṣṭa-pūrvaṃ dṛṣṭvā), I am immensely overjoyed and gladdened (hṛṣito 'smi). However, simultaneously, my mind is completely perturbed, shaken, and tormented by sheer terror (bhayena ca pravyathitaṃ mano me). Therefore, O Lord (deva), please show me once again (tad eva me darśaya) Your original, personal form (rūpaṃ). Be gracious and merciful to me (prasīda), O Lord of all demigods (deveśa), O refuge of the universe (jagan-nivāsa)!
