"Thinking of You as my friend, I have rashly addressed You "O Krishna," "O Yadava," "O my friend," not knowing Your glories. Please forgive whatever I may have done in madness or in love."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna is struck with intense remorse for his past casual behavior towards Krishna. He confesses: Thinking of You merely as my friend and equal (sakheti matvā), whatever I have said presumptuously, rashly, or without respect (prasabhaṃ yad uktaṃ), casually calling out, 'O Krishna, O Yadava, O my friend' (he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti). I did all of this completely ignorant and unaware (ajānatā) of this infinite, staggering majesty and glory of Yours (mahimānaṃ tavedaṃ). Whether I acted out of sheer foolishness and negligence (pramādāt) or even out of deep, familiar love (praṇayena vāpi), I ask for Your forgiveness.
