namaḥ purastād atha pṛṣṭhatas te namo 'stu te sarvata eva sarva | ananta-vīryāmita-vikramas tvaṃ sarvaṃ samāpnoṣi tato 'si sarvaḥ || 40 ||

"Obeisances to You from the front, from behind and from all sides! O unbounded power, You are the master of limitless might! You are all-pervading, and thus You are everything!"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna’s ecstasy translates into a full 360-degree physical and spatial surrender. He cries out: I offer my deepest obeisances and bow to You from the front (namaḥ purastād), and also from behind You (atha pṛṣṭhatas te)! Let my bows and surrender be offered to You from absolutely all sides and every direction (namo 'stu te sarvata eva), O You who are everything (sarva)! You possess infinite, unbounded power and valor (ananta-vīryā), and Your strength and martial prowess are totally immeasurable and limitless (amita-vikramas tvaṃ). You completely cover, pervade, and encompass the entire universe (sarvaṃ samāpnoṣi); therefore, You are absolutely everything (tato 'si sarvaḥ)!
