Ch 11Verse 39
Adhyāya 11 Shloka 39

"You are air, and You are the supreme controller! You are fire, You are water, and You are the moon! You are Brahma, the first living creature, and You are the great-grandfather. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto You a thousand times, and again and yet again!"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna lists the fundamental cosmic identities of the Lord before completely breaking down into desperate, repetitive reverence. He says: You are the wind (vāyur), the supreme regulator of death (yamo), the fire (agnir), the lord of the oceans (varuṇaḥ), and the moon (śaśāṅkaḥ). You are the original progenitor of all life, Lord Brahma (prajāpatis tvaṃ), and indeed, You are the great-grandfather (the creator of the creator) (prapitāmahaś ca). Therefore, I offer my deepest obeisances and bow down to You (namo namas te 'stu) a thousand times over (sahasra-kṛtvaḥ)! And again (punaś ca), and yet again, abundantly and repeatedly (bhūyo 'pi), I bow to You, I bow to You (namo namas te)!
