कस्माच्च ते न नमेरन्महात्मन् गरीयसे ब्रह्मणोऽप्यादिकर्त्रे | अनन्त देवेश जगन्निवास त्वमक्षरं सदसत्तत्परं यत् || ३७ ||

kasmāc ca te na nameran mahātman garīyase brahmaṇo 'py ādi-kartre | ananta deveśa jagan-nivāsa tvam akṣaraṃ sad-asat tat paraṃ yat || 37 ||

"O great one, greater even than Brahma, You are the original creator. Why then should they not offer their respectful obeisances unto You? O limitless one, God of gods, refuge of the universe! You are the invincible source, the cause of all causes, transcendental to this material manifestation."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna justifies the universal homage being paid to Krishna. He asks a rhetorical question: And why should they not bow down and offer their respectful obeisances unto You (kasmāc ca te na nameran), O Great Soul (mahātman)? For You are greater and more venerable (garīyase) even than Brahma, the creator, because You are his original creator (brahmaṇo 'py ādi-kartre). O limitless one without end (ananta), O Lord of all demigods (deveśa), O refuge and resting place of the universe (jagan-nivāsa)! You are the imperishable, indestructible reality (tvam akṣaraṃ); You are both the manifest effect (sat) and the unmanifest cause (asat), and You are that which is supreme and transcendental to both (tat paraṃ yat).
