"O Vishnu, I see You devouring all people from all sides with Your flaming mouths. Covering all the universe with Your immeasurable rays, You are manifest with terrible, scorching rays."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna's vision reaches a peak of apocalyptic intensity. He cries out: O Vishnu (viṣṇo), You are actively licking Your lips (lelihyase) while continuously devouring and swallowing (grasamānaḥ) all the worlds and multitudes of people completely (lokān samagrān). You are doing this from absolutely every direction simultaneously (samantāl) with Your blazing, flaming mouths (vadanair jvaladbhiḥ). By entirely filling and covering the whole universe (jagat samagraṃ āpūrya) with Your fierce, immeasurable effulgence (tejobhir), Your terrifying, scorching rays (bhāsas tavogrāḥ) are burning and tormenting everything (pratapanti).
