Adhyāya 11 Shloka 31

आख्याहि मे को भवानुग्ररूपो नमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद | विज्ञातुमिच्छामि भवन्तमाद्यं न हि प्रजानामि तव प्रवृत्तिम् || ३१ ||

ākhyāhi me ko bhavān ugra-rūpo namo 'stu te deva-vara prasīda | vijñātum icchāmi bhavantam ādyaṃ na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim || 31 ||

"O Lord of lords, so fierce of form, please tell me who You are. I offer my obeisances unto You; please be gracious to me. You are the primal Lord. I want to know about You, for I do not know what Your mission is."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Completely overwhelmed and shattered by the vision, Arjuna pleads for an explanation. He cries out: Please tell and declare to me (ākhyāhi me), who are You exactly (ko bhavān) in this terrifying, fierce form (ugra-rūpo)? O best of all the gods (deva-vara), I offer my deepest obeisances and surrender unto You (namo 'stu te); please, be gracious and merciful to me (prasīda). I deeply desire to truly understand and know You (vijñātum icchāmi bhavantam), who are the original, primeval Lord (ādyaṃ). Because right now, I absolutely do not understand or comprehend (na hi prajānāmi) Your actual mission, purpose, or activity here (tava pravṛttim).
