Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The macro-cosmic vision suddenly zooms in on the micro-reality of the Kurukshetra battlefield. Arjuna observes: All these sons of King Dhritarashtra (amī ca tvāṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ sarve), accompanied exactly by all their assembled ranks of allied kings and earth-protectors (sahaivāvani-pāla-saṅghaiḥ), along with the grandsire Bhishma, the teacher Drona, and Karna, the son of a charioteer (bhīṣmo droṇaḥ sūta-putras tathāsau). Furthermore, even the principal warriors and chief generals from our own side (sahāsmadīyair api yodha-mukhyaiḥ) are all rushing into You. (Note: The action of rushing into the mouths is completed in the next verse).
