Ch 11Verse 25
Adhyāya 11 Shloka 25

"O Lord of lords, O refuge of the worlds, please be gracious to me. I cannot keep my balance seeing thus Your blazing deathlike faces and awful teeth. In all directions I am bewildered."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna's terror reaches its absolute peak, forcing him to beg for mercy. He says: Just by looking (dṛṣṭvaiva) at Your faces (te mukhāni), which are rendered terrifying by awful, jagged teeth (daṃṣṭrā-karālāni) and which blaze exactly like the apocalyptic fire of death that destroys the universe at the end of time (kālानल-sannibhāni), I have completely lost my spatial awareness and do not know the directions (diśo na jāne). I cannot find any shelter, peace, or comfort (na labhe ca śarma). Therefore, O Lord of the demigods (deveśa), O ultimate refuge of the universe (jagan-nivāsa), please be gracious and merciful to me (prasīda)!
