Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna describes the reactions of the highest beings in the universe to this terrifying vision. He says: Verily (hi), all these hosts and multitudes of celestial demigods (amī sura-saṅghā) are surrendering and actively entering into You (tvāṃ viśanti). Among them, some are exceedingly terrified and afraid (kecid bhītāḥ), and they are offering praises and prayers with completely folded hands (prāñjalayo gṛṇanti). Meanwhile, the great assemblies of eminent sages and perfected beings (maharṣi-siddha-saṅghāḥ), crying out 'Let there be peace and auspiciousness!' (svastīty uktvā), are glorifying and worshipping You (stuvanti tvāṃ) by singing abundant, complete Vedic hymns of praise (stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ).
