Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna summarizes what he has comprehended from Krishna's vast discourses. He addresses Krishna poetically as Kamala-patrākṣa (O lotus-eyed one). He states: I have now heard directly from You (śrutau mayā tvattaḥ) in great, extensive detail (vistaraśo) regarding the fundamental mechanics of the appearance/creation (bhava) and the disappearance/annihilation (apyayau) of all living entities and material forms (bhūtānāṃ). Furthermore, I have heard and realized the truth of Your supreme, eternal, and inexhaustible greatness and glory (māhāṭmyam api cāvyayam).
