Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna, having recovered enough to speak, begins to verify exactly what he is witnessing, confirming Krishna's promise from verse 7. He says: O Lord (deva), I see clearly right now (paśyāmi) situated within Your very body (tava dehe) all the demigods (devāṃs) and similarly, all the various assembled multitudes of living entities and species (sarvāṃs tathā bhūta-viśeṣa-saṅghān). Specifically, I see the creator Lord Brahma (brahmāṇam īśaṃ) situated upon his universal lotus flower (kamalāsana-stham), as well as Lord Shiva, all the great sages (ṛṣīṃś ca sarvān), and the divine, celestial serpents (uragāṃś ca divyān).
