Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Sanjaya describes Arjuna's immediate physical and emotional reaction to the Universal Form. Then, immediately upon seeing this (tataḥ), Arjuna, the conqueror of wealth (dhanañjayaḥ), became completely overwhelmed and engulfed by profound astonishment and wonder (sa vismayāviṣṭo). His physical body reacted so intensely that his hair stood on end in ecstasy and terror (hṛṣṭa-romā). Instinctively, he bowed his head down in deep reverence (praṇamya śirasā) to the Supreme Lord (devaṃ). Folding his hands together in a gesture of submission and prayer (kṛtāñjalir), Arjuna finally began to speak (abhāṣata).
