Adhyāya 11 Shloka 12

दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता | यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः || १२ ||

divi sūrya-sahasrasya bhaved yugapad utthitā | yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syād bhāsas tasya mahātmanaḥ || 12 ||

"If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that universal form."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Sanjaya struggles to find an earthly metaphor to describe the blinding illumination of the Universal Form. He proposes a staggering hypothetical: If, in the sky (divi), the blazing light and radiance of hundreds of thousands of suns (sūrya-sahasrasya bhāḥ) were to burst forth and rise simultaneously at the exact same moment (bhaved yugapad utthitā)—only then (yadi), perhaps, that combined, unimaginable brilliance might slightly resemble or be somewhat equal to (sadṛśī sā syād) the blazing effulgence and glory (bhāsas) of that Great Supreme Soul (tasya mahātmanaḥ).
