बुद्धिर्ज्ञानमसम्मोहः क्षमा सत्यं दमः शमः | सुखं दुःखं भवोऽभावो भयं चाभयमेव च || ४ ||

buddhir jñānam asammohaḥ kṣamā satyaṃ damaḥ śamaḥ | sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhavo 'bhāvo bhayaṃ cābhayam eva ca || 4 ||

"Intelligence, knowledge, freedom from doubt and delusion, forgiveness, truthfulness, control of the senses, control of the mind, happiness and distress, birth, death, fear, fearlessness..."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

In verses 4 and 5, Krishna lists the vast spectrum of human qualities and experiences, affirming that all of them originate from Him. Verse 4 lists: Intelligence or the ability to analyze (buddhir), spiritual knowledge (jñānam), freedom from illusion or doubt (asammohaḥ), patience and forgiveness (kṣamā), truthfulness (satyaṃ), control of the external senses (damaḥ), control of the internal mind (śamaḥ), pleasure/happiness (sukhaṃ), pain/distress (duḥkhaṃ), birth/existence (bhavo), death/non-existence (abhāvo), fear (bhayaṃ), and fearlessness (abhayam eva ca).
