Ch 10Verse 5
Adhyāya 10 Shloka 5

अहिंसा समता तुष्टिस्तपो दानं यशोऽयशः | भवन्ति भावा भूतानां मत्त एव पृथग्विधाः || ५ ||

ahiṃsā samatā tuṣṭis tapo dānaṃ yaśo 'yaśaḥ | bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṃ matta eva pṛthag-vidhāḥ || 5 ||

"Nonviolence, equanimity, satisfaction, austerity, charity, fame and infamy—all these various qualities of living beings are created by Me alone."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Continuing the list from verse 4, Krishna concludes the spectrum of qualities: Non-violence or harmlessness (ahiṃsā), balance or equanimity of mind (samatā), contentment and satisfaction (tuṣṭis), voluntary austerity or discipline (tapo), charity or giving (dānaṃ), honor/fame (yaśo), and dishonor/infamy (ayaśaḥ). He emphatically declares that all these diverse and manifold qualities and states of being (bhavanti bhāvā pṛthag-vidhāḥ) found among all living entities (bhūtānāṃ) originate and are created solely from Him (matta eva).
