"Among all means of suppressing lawlessness I am punishment, and of those who seek victory I am morality. Of secret things I am silence, and of the wise I am the wisdom."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna lists the ultimate principles of justice, success, and secrecy. He states: Among all forces that subdue, control, or punish lawlessness (damayatām), I am the rod of punishment or justice (daṇḍo asmi). For those who desire victory and conquest (jigīṣatām), I am strict morality, ethics, and statesmanship (nītir asmi). Among all things that are hidden or secret (guhyānāṃ), I am absolute silence (maunaṃ caivāsmi). And among the wise and knowledgeable (jñānavatām), I am the very wisdom they possess (jñānaṃ aham).
