Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna brings the cosmic scale down to profound personal intimacy. He declares: Among the Vrishni dynasty (vṛṣṇīnāṃ), I am Vasudeva (vāsudevo 'smi—Krishna's own name). Among the Pandava brothers (pāṇḍavānāṃ), I am you, Dhananjaya (Arjuna). Among the great silent sages (munīnām), I am the compiler of the Vedas, Vyasa (ahaṃ vyāsaḥ). And among the brilliant poets and profound thinkers (kavīnām), I am Usana (uśanā kaviḥ), the incredibly intelligent spiritual master of the Asuras.
