Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The Lord lists the highest forms of music, poetry, and time. He says: Among all the musical hymns of the Sama Veda (sāmnāṃ), I am the magnificent Brihat-sama (bṛhat-sāma tathā). Among all poetic meters and rhythms (chandasām), I am the sacred Gayatri mantra (gāyatrī aham). Among the twelve months of the year (māsānāṃ), I am the auspicious month of Margasirsa (mārga-śīrṣo 'ham). And among all the seasons (ṛtūnāṃ), I am the blossoming, flower-bearing Spring (kusumākaraḥ).
