Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna encompasses the absolute extremes of existence. He states: I am death (mṛtyuḥ), the all-devouring force that plunders and takes away everything (sarva-haraś cāham). Simultaneously, I am the origin and generating principle (udbhavaś ca) of all future things yet to be born (bhaviṣyatām). Furthermore, among the feminine qualities or women (nārīṇāṃ), I am fame/glory (kīrtiḥ), fortune/beauty (śrīr), eloquent speech (vāk), memory (smṛtir), deep intelligence (medhā), steadfastness/determination (dhṛtiḥ), and patience/forgiveness (kṣamā).
