Adhyāya 10 Shloka 33

अक्षराणामकारोऽस्मि द्वन्द्वः सामासिकस्य च | अहमेवाक्षयः कालो धाताहं विश्वतोमुखः || ३३ ||

akṣarāṇām akāro 'smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca | aham evākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāhaṃ viśvato-mukhaḥ || 33 ||

"Of letters I am the letter A, and among compound words I am the dual compound. I am also inexhaustible time, and of creators I am Brahma, whose manifold faces turn everywhere."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna breaks down His presence into the fundamentals of language and time. He declares: Among all the letters of the alphabet (akṣarāṇām), I am the primary letter 'A' (akāro 'smi). Among grammar and compound words (sāmāsikasya ca), I am the dual compound (dvandvaḥ) where both words retain equal importance. I alone am the eternal, inexhaustible Time (aham eva akṣayaḥ kālo). And among all creators and maintainers, I am the four-headed Brahma (dhātāhaṃ), whose faces look in all directions simultaneously (viśvato-mukhaḥ).
