Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The Lord lists manifestations known for their immense purifying and unstoppable force. He declares: Among all forces that cleanse and purify (pavatām), I am the mighty wind (pavanaḥ). Among all warriors and those who bear weapons (śastra-bhṛtām), I am the supreme archer, Lord Rama. Among all fierce aquatic creatures and fishes (jhaṣāṇāṃ), I am the shark or crocodile (makaraś cāsmi). And among all streams and flowing rivers (srotasām), I am the sacred River Ganges (asmi jāhnavī).
