Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna expands His identification to unexpected realms. He says: Among the atheistic, demonic descendants of Diti (daityānāṃ), I am the pure, boy-saint Prahlada (prahlādaś cāsmi). Among those forces that calculate, subdue, and devour all things (kalayatām), I am Time itself (kālaḥ aham). Among all wild beasts and animals (mṛgāṇāṃ), I am the king of beasts, the lion (mṛgendro 'haṃ). And among all birds that fly (pakṣiṇām), I am Garuda, the son of Vinata (vainateyaś ca).
